Her voice shook with anger. “...Ovelia...answer me!”

“I accept your challenge. I will see how proficient you are before you gain entry.” The Sanguine Overlord drew a rapier from within her Robes, the familiar texture of the hilt along her fingers was light and endearing. Her fingers pressed lightly against the edge of the weapon, her gray eyes focusing now on Arden. The maiden before her shook heavily with her sword in hand, the inset azure gaze intensely burrowing through her.

Without a moment's notice, Arden charged. The keen edge of Solstice cleaved through the rapier on the first parry, Ovelia's eyes widening in surprise. She quickly dodged another swipe before she engulfed her hand into flame. Carefully Ovelia's hand pushed the holy edge from her, the other hand pressed firmly against her lower back.

Arden leaped back and her eyes wildly burned with rage. Dancing in the air with her sword in tow, Solstice's flames tore through the air. A gargantuan ice wall formed in front of Ovelia, the blaze barely melting the thick layers of ice.

“Is that the best you can do?!” Arden's words rung true. Ovelia lowered her hand and redirected the holy edge. Instantly she knocked it aside with her foot and spun on her heel. Striking the other woman in the stomach, she bounced against the ground harshly before crashing against the wall. Her eyes blurred for a moment as she took in a deep breath and attempted to stand. Slowly she looked toward Ovelia who began to approach her. Solstice lay only a few feet away, the edge dull and lifeless. Weaving magic about her being, she wreathed her hand in brilliant flame. Ovelia instantly countered the blow.

Her leg struck harshly against Arden's frame. She fell to one knee and gasped harshly for air.

“...You were outclassed.” If I wasn't a trained fighter...she would most definitely have killed me... The Sanguine Overlord seemed partially shaken, but held fast to the illusion of effortless elegance. “Now you will go to the Academy. You will serve the Citadel and aid in the plight against the Vampire Menace.”

“Underneath you?!” Indignantly she protested. Arden attempted again to stand upright but was thrust down again. “...I will...one day...rise to meet more than what Sanctuary expects of me.”

“...And what is it that Mother Sanctuary expects of you, my dear?” Ovelia now spoke like a parent to a child.

“I will destroy you.” Spitting blood from her mouth, the young woman stood upright. Guards opened the door after her and the Sanguine Overlord stood in the center of the Council Chambers, her hands shaking. Slowly she turned her head over to the holy blade, Solstice. Carefully she approached the opalescent sword. Now she was intrigued by its durability and reached for it. Flames wreathed around her hands and burned through the ancient Acolyte Robes which guarded her body.

How did she obtain something like this...?

“Valtieri, that vampire smith, forged it for her as his dying gift.” Another voice echoed through the Chambers. Ovelia nearly leaped from her skin and turned about, seeing a woman garbed in a white robe. Her eyes danced with the brilliance of endless full moons, the purest gold eyes penetrated the darkness. Snow white hair flowed from her scalp and elegantly she tied it back with a red bow. Despite the cold stone floor, she remained barefoot. “We both know that one who has used the Soul Cube in its purest form is condemned to death from Him.”

“Yes, Father is the one who took him, was it not?”

“Bid him to take his own life and join Him in the otherworld. Nothing short of something to appease his immortal whim of dying.” The Mother's foot brushed against the hilt of Solstice. Curiously she reached for the blade and held it aloft. “Strange. This blade was forged to respond to the purity in one's heart, was it not?”

“I believe so.” Ovelia seemed troubled and turned to face the Mother.

“Arden...what a perplexing child, carrying around this blade among blades.” The Mother began to smile almost viciously, but faced away before the Overlord could take notice. “Purity can be a double edged sword, even if the flames themselves are imbued with holy power.”

“Indeed. We must return this to her. Without even the slightest effort, the sword destroyed my weapon in combat upon the first parry. I will not have it held by anyone other than its rightful owner.” Her azure gaze tore through the Mother, who seemed bemused by the holy sword. “Let us go, Accalia. I need to speak with her.”

“As you wish, my Overlord.” The Mother held the sword carefully in both hands, the blade pointed to the ground. A small chuckle began to escape her, Ovelia carrying on slightly ahead of her.

“Who does she think she is?!” Arden's fist slammed against the wall, small craters forming from the impact. Her hands were covered in her own blood, almost blind rage numbing the pain. “I know who I am! I just...”

“Need someone to believe in you, is that it?” Accalia's voice stirred even more rage within her. Arden's surroundings returned to her as she took in the presence of the other woman and took in a deep breath. A soft caress graced the back of her neck as the Mother neared her. Halted by the new sensation, she felt all anger leave her before she felt another take her.

    “...W-What're you...?”

“...I see that you're still very innocent...” The Mother's tone softened and her body calmed. Nothing short of ease took hold of her and she felt serenity, a wave of energy pulsing out from within her. A small glow escaped her fingers, washing over the other woman with a gentle touch. “I could change that, you know. Much like many things in your life I have changed.”

The young woman seemed dazed and unable to hear. Her eyes glazed over. Suddenly her hand clenched into a fist as the magic lost its effect on her. Arden's fist soared past Accalia in an attempt to strike and was immediately dodged. She was pinned against the wall. Solstice was the only force separating them; the young woman turned away.

“...Just understand, my dear. Some may wish to see you crumble beneath their feet. I will teach you skills which you will need in the future to ensure your place.” A smirk played about her lips. Sinister scenarios played out for her in her mind, her hands reaching to the one before her to make them a reality. Helpless and terrified, Arden found no will to fight. She felt the hands of her captor run down her sensitive body before the door across the chamber opened. In the doorway a pair of familiar eyes scanned the room and promptly entered. The Sanguine Overlord's presence halted any further advances.

“Accalia. What are you doing to my daughter?” Impatience welled from within the words. She grimaced and hid a playful laugh.

“I was merely giving her back her weapon, as we agreed.” She finally released the spell and the sword. The young woman returned to her normal state, bewildered. “Is that not what you gave me instructions for? I am well aware of whom I was serving.”

“It doesn't mean you need to take matters into your own hands.” Ovelia's head lowered as she surveyed Arden. Her azure gaze burned with a luminescent passion, her fingers clutching the handle to her longsword. “Now...please, leave us. I must speak to Arden alone.”

“As you wish.” In an instant, they were left alone, magical energies dispersed into the chamber. Arden's body was immersed by horrendous feelings of hatred toward the woman before her. She clenched her fists almost in frustration but held her tongue.

Soon she was pulled into a tight embrace. The sweet perfumes of the motherly Sanguine Overlord filled her nostrils and she felt an urge to struggle. Without another word they stood there in the center of the room.

“...My child...” The words stung Arden at her core. “...Forget not what I have taught you. I know there are many times when you wish for more power than your body can handle physically. What I am doing here will aid you...not hinder.”

“You know exactly what to say in order for me to feel helpless.” The young girl's arms wrapped around her surrogate mother's waist.

“That's my girl.” A small smile escaped the Sanguine Overlord.

Arden remained silent, her eyes gazing toward the floor. Solstice seemed to quiver underneath her touch, as if afraid of the onslaught waiting to be unleashed.
